EVERYDAY BOOKKEEPING
A bookkeeping routine that fits around the work
A small, repeatable habit for income, expenses and supporting records—without turning your weekend into an admin session.
Give every payment a place
Record business receipts with a date, source and a useful description. Keep employment salary separate from business turnover. If you invoice clients, distinguish the invoice you sent from the payment you actually received. The accounting basis you use affects when income and expenses belong in your tax records; check the appropriate treatment for your business.
Keep the evidence with the expense
Save a legible receipt or invoice alongside the cost. Note why it relates to your business, especially when the purpose might be less obvious later. Recording an expense does not establish that it is allowable: private use, mixed costs and capital items can need different treatment. A receipt photo helps organise evidence, but you still need an accurate, readable record.
Make a weekly appointment with your numbers
Choose a short, repeatable slot. Look for missing receipts, forgotten income and journeys without a business purpose. Reconcile what you recorded against the evidence you hold. The point is consistency rather than a perfect-looking dashboard. A calm routine helps you spot gaps while you can still remember the details.
Review before you rely on it
A report is only as useful as its underlying records. Review dates, categories and duplicates before sharing an export with your accountant. Keep copies of the supporting documents for the period HMRC requires, and check which retention rules apply to your accounting circumstances. QuikTax can help organise the routine; responsibility for the return remains yours.
